What is Saikyo the Online Comic?
Saikyo the Online Comic ("Saikyo" for short) is an experimental comic where I try out a lot of different things in the process of discovering more about comic theory in general. In the process, I discuss various topics about comic creation through the comic. In other words, it's an online comic that talks about making an online comic. Yeah, I know it's a terrible idea, but quite frankly, all of my other ideas were even worse... actually, I don't think I even had any other coherent ideas...
Why make a comic?
That's a good question, especially considering that I'm not very good at drawing and that my idea is pretty bad to boot. Probably one of the reasons is because of the allure of comics as an art form. It's a medium which is rarely used to it's full potential and eventhough I'm not yet capable of doing so, I'd still like to see what I can accomplish. Another reason is becase it's a fun way to get ideas across. I could have written stuff about comics, but that wouldn't have been nearly as interesting to me.
But isn't it basically a tutorial?
Well, in a sense it is. I do discuss some of the things that go into creating an online comic, but most of them you probably could have figured out on your own. I'll try to throw in the occasional drawing tip every now and then, but given that I'm not that good myself, I imagine it won't be of much help to anyone other than beginners. The real reason behind the comic is to explore some of the different comic techniques and to give myself some practice and incentive to get better.
But if you admit you're lousy, then why would readers come here?
They probably won't. I'm sure I'll teach a few people a few things, but I'm not really doing this comic for high readership. I'm doing it for my own benefit. If people happen to enjoy reading my comics, all the better for them. It's really more of a self-discovery thing for me.
